No K-Grease Fire in This "Kitchen"

Ah, how the once mighty have fallen. Keith, he of the too-low pants and, um, casually inventive vocabulary, went toe to toe with the Sultan of Spite and was brutally knocked down. You don't try to take on Gordon Ramsay, especially not on his home turf. Maybe in the line for Pink's (where of course there is no Gordon Ramsay hot dog). But in the fiery pits of Hell's Kitchen? Not a chance. Just a few weeks back (hell, just as recently as the beginning of last night's episode), Keith seemed like a shoo-in to make it to the final round and have a chance of becoming the executive chef at a restaurant at the "billion dollar" Red Rocks Resort in Las Vegas. I always find it amusing, first of all, that the show makes a distinction that the winner of this culinary competition will win the title of executive chef (rather than head chef) because Gordon Ramsay has always been rather upfront about the fact that he finds most executive chefs about as useful to a restaurant as

TV (Not) on DVD Update: "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Melrose Place"

Sharpen those claws, ladies. Both Amanda and Brenda are finally coming to DVD. Since my initial post on which television series were sadly passed over for DVD treatment (" TV (Not) on DVD "), two series criminally neglected until now will in fact finally make the leap to digital. TVShowsonDVD.com is reporting that the premiere seasons of both Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place will be released this fall on DVD. The Beverly Hills 90210 release will contain all 22 episodes from the series' freshman series, select commentary by creator Darren Star, and an interactive featurette. Melrose Place will contain all 32 episodes from Season One, as well as mini featurettes and episode recaps. And, in a stroke of flawed marketing genius, the studio is releasing both Melrose and 90210 in a set called "The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful Pack." Set would contain 14 discs (8 discs for Melrose ; 6 discs for 90210 ) and contain the same special features as the individ

"4400" Reasons Why I Love This Show

Well, okay, maybe not 4400 reasons... Every once in a while, a few series turn up that I wish I watched, but because of scheduling or time constraints (my televisionary obsessions are legion) or lack of space on my TiVo, I just don't get around to watching. USA's fantastic drama The 4400 was one of those series. You'll notice the past tense there. Fortunately, I have a friend (she knows who she is) who usually beats me senseless until I finally give in and begin to watch the neglected series in question. Nine times out of ten do I end up falling in love with the program. She was right about Battlestar Galactica (now easily one of my favorite series ever) and she was right about The 4400 as well. I bow before her televisionary tastes. I recently sped through the first two seasons of The 4400 over the past few weeks, hoping to catch up to the general populace's place in the third season. While I haven't quite gotten there quite yet, I did manage to reach the two-h

Another "Lost" Girl: Kiele Sanchez Joins the Cast(aways)

That deserted island is about to get even more crowded. Following the recent announcements that actors Rodrigo Santoro and Elizabeth Mitchell have joined the cast of ABC's hit drama Lost , yet another castaway has been revealed. Related 's Kiele Sanchez will join the cast of Lost next season as Nikki, a potential love interest for Rodrigo Santoro's character. I can only hope that both will be heretofore undetected members of doomed Oceanic Flight 815 who, despite their gorgeous visages, have somehow managed to remain out of the cameras' glare. Somehow, anyway.

The Plot Thickens: "The Office" Whodunit Continues

Now that we've solved the mystery of the booted designer on Bravo's Project Runway (it was Keith, natch), we can turn our attentions back to that other summertime riddle: namely who stole $3000 from Dunder-Mifflin's Scranton branch . For those of you not up to speed (for shame!), Office accountants Angela, Oscar, and Kevin are hot on the trail on a dastardly thief who misappropriated several thousand dollars; it's up to our not-so-crack team of amateur investigators to unmask the culprit and they've been interrogating Dunder-Mifflin-ites each week in the hopes that someone will come out and admit their wrongdoing. (Well, honestly, if it was Angela doing the interrogation, I think I'd crack, even if I didn't steal the money.) The list of suspects is narrowing significantly. In the last few weeks, not-so-secret alcoholic Meredith was questioned (if she had the money, she'd be in Jamaica, drinking Red Stripe on the beach), along with timid Phyllis (she n

Pattern Recognition: "Project Runway" Evicts One Designer

And then there were ten... My instincts told me that the Project Runway evictee would be menswear designer Keith, a man as renowned for his innate abilities (that halter dress from episode 1 was stunning) as much as his constant "bending" of the rules (to wit: getting the Mood fabric store employees to give him a discount on materials). And while I'm glad that the reason he was booted by the series' producers had nothing to do with that scandal involving his design portfolio, I was surprised that Keith would actually keep fashion "how to" books laying around the flat, along with those damning pattern books. Especially if even being in possession of those verboten items is enough to get you dismissed from the show. Guru Tim Gunn is right; a show like Project Runway lives and dies by its reputation. Without its integrity, Runway would be another vapid reality show and the show can't be seen allowing one designer to have a major advantage over the other

Channel Surfing: 8.2.06

Fox Chases "Gilmore" Girl Only a few weeks after leaving the series, outbound Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman Palladino has set up her next series project at Fox, according to a report filed by Variety . The project, written by Sherman-Palladino (who may also direct the pilot), is a half-hour dramedy that will focus on two estranged sisters who come together when one agrees to carry the other's baby. No studio is currently attached to the project, which is a put pilot at Fox. The news comes after Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino, a fellow Gilmore Girls scribe/producer, departed the series in April after failing to reach a deal with studio Warner Bros. Television. Sherman-Palladino's replacement as showrunner on the CW dramedy series is Gilmore Girls writer/producer David Rosenthal . While I doubt that Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel will be playing those sisters (though wouldn't that be great?), I do suspect that the pilot will feature Sherm
